If you buy thermoplastic road marking paint for Africa, the Middle East or Southeast Asia, sooner or later a tender will ask for “BS 3262 material”. It is the most-cited British standard in the trade — and one of the most misquoted. BS 3262 is not a single document but a set of three parts, two of which were withdrawn in 2000, and many numbers that circulate under its name actually come from project specifications, not from the standard itself. This guide summarizes what the original text requires, so you can specify — and audit suppliers — with precision.

The functional successors of Parts 1 and 2 are the European standards: BS EN 1871 (laboratory properties), BS EN 1436 (road performance) and BS EN 1824 (road trials), with glass beads covered by BS EN 1424 (premix) and BS EN 1423 (drop-on). Part 3 — how the material is applied on the road — remains in force. When a contract cites BS 3262, it should always name the part, year and amendment; “complies with BS 3262” on its own is technically incomplete.
The standard covers white, yellow and black hot-applied thermoplastic marking material — melted on site and laid by screed, spray or extrusion for centerlines, edge lines and crossings. The material is aggregate, pigment and filler bound by a plasticized resin, with premixed glass beads added when the line must reflectorize and drop-on beads applied to the hot surface. Preformed tapes, solvent or water-borne cold paints, two-component cold plastics and inlaid markings are outside its scope.

Note that the premix beads sit inside the 80 ± 2% total, not on top of it: with 20% beads and 20% binder, aggregate, pigment and filler together make up roughly 60% — and the standard deliberately does not fix their individual ratios. White pigment must be anatase or rutile titanium dioxide to BS 1851, but no minimum TiO₂ content is specified. Lead chromate is capped at 5% of total mass. The combined solids must pass a 2.80 mm sieve completely, with 65–95% passing 600 µm.

The heat-stability test stirs the material for six hours at 200°C or the manufacturer’s declared maximum application temperature, whichever is lower. One trap to avoid: luminance factor is a daytime whiteness figure — it is not the night-time retroreflectivity (RL) of modern EN 1436 specifications, and the two cannot substitute for each other.
BS 3262 references the historical bead standard BS 6088: Class A for premix (65–95% retained on a 425 µm sieve, ≥ 70% true spheres) and Class B for drop-on (≥ 80% true spheres). Both classes require a refractive index of at least 1.50, SiO₂ of at least 70%, magnetic particles below 0.1%, and resistance to water and acids. BS 6088 itself has since been replaced by the BS EN 1423 / 1424 system, which is how modern orders normally specify bead grades.
Concrete and polished-aggregate asphalt need a compatible primer; new concrete must be cleared of laitance and curing compound. Material may only go down on a dry surface above 5°C. Blocks are broken to ≤ 4 kg, melted in a kettle with mechanical agitation and a thermometer accurate to ± 5°C — and used within 6 hours for hydrocarbon-resin material or 4 hours for rosin-based material, never exceeding the manufacturer’s declared temperature. Minimum thicknesses (excluding drop-on beads):

Line width tolerance is +10% / −5% of the specified width. The 1998 amendment removed the drop-on bead application-rate annex, so the current text sets no universal grams-per-square-metre figure.
A large share of “BS 3262” requirements circulating in the market are actually project-level additions. They are perfectly legitimate — but they must be agreed as contract clauses, because the standard’s original text does not contain them:

Modern projects typically combine the historical BS 3262 formulation framework with current EN performance requirements — BS EN 1871 for laboratory properties, BS EN 1436 classes for on-road performance, and BS EN 1423 / 1424 for beads. Anything beyond the original text — a higher softening point, a TiO₂ minimum, a bead application rate, an RL target — should be written out explicitly and verified against the datasheet, not assumed from the standard’s name.
