A solid, reflectorized thermoplastic road marking material meeting the American standard AASHTO M 249-12 (2024) — the specification cited by tenders across US-influenced markets.
M 249 specifies a factory-reflectorized material: unlike BS 3262, the standard requires the manufacturer to premix 30–40% AASHTO M 247 Type 1 glass beads into the material at the plant, with more beads dropped on during application. The tables below list the standard’s specific requirements; the figures for our material against your specification come with each order’s datasheet.
| Component | White | Yellow |
|---|---|---|
| Binder | ≥ 18.0% | ≥ 18.0% |
| Premix glass beads (uncoated, AASHTO M 247 Type I) | 30 – 40% | 30 – 40% |
| Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) | ≥ 10.0% | not specified |
| CaCO₃ + inert fillers | ≤ 42.0% | manufacturer’s formulation |
The 30–40% covers the beads inside the material only; drop-on beads applied to the hot line are on top of it.
| Property | White | Yellow |
|---|---|---|
| Specific gravity | ≤ 2.15 | ≤ 2.15 |
| Daytime luminance factor Y, after heat conditioning | ≥ 75% | ≥ 45% |
| Yellowness index | ≤ 0.12 | — |
| Softening point (ring-and-ball) | 102.5 ± 9.5°C | 102.5 ± 9.5°C |
| Low-temperature stress resistance at −9.4 ± 1.7°C | no cracks | no cracks |
| Impact resistance | ≥ 1.13 J | ≥ 1.13 J |
| Flow resistance (residue) | ≤ 18% | ≤ 21% |
| Flow resistance after extended heating (8 h) | ≤ 28% | ≤ 28% |
| Storage life | 1 year — uniform melting, no caking or unmelted particles | |
Colour is judged after conditioning the material for 240 ± 5 min at 218 ± 2°C — a report that skips the heat treatment does not prove M 249 compliance. For pre-qualification the standard also sets 180-day test-deck retained retroreflectivity: white ≥ 325, yellow ≥ 200 mcd·m⁻²·lx⁻¹, measured on a double-drop bead system.
| Parameter | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Method | Spray, screed extrusion or ribbon extrusion — buyer’s option |
| Material temperature | 211 ± 7°C |
| Applied thickness | 3.2 – 4.8 mm |
| Open to traffic, at 10 ± 2°C ambient | ≤ 2 min |
| Open to traffic, at 32 ± 2°C ambient | ≤ 10 min |
| Surface drop-on beads | rate set by the project — the standard fixes no universal g/m² |
Many “M 249” clauses circulating in the market are project add-ons — legitimate, but they belong in the contract, because the standard’s current text does not set them:
| Common claim | What M 249-12 (2024) actually says |
|---|---|
| Binder 18 – 22% | Sets a minimum of 18.0% only — no 22% cap |
| Bond strength ≥ 1.24 MPa | T 250 has the test method; M 249 sets no acceptance value |
| Flash point ≥ 246°C | No unified threshold in the current text |
| Drop-on beads at 250 – 500 g/m² | Application rate is a project clause, not a standard value |
| Initial RL of 300 / 400 / 500 | Standard gives only 180-day retained values (325 / 200) |
| Skid resistance BPN ≥ 45 | No unified skid limit |
| Application at 180 – 200°C | The standard’s reference condition is 211 ± 7°C |
If your tender sets any of these, state them explicitly — we formulate against the clause and answer with a datasheet that covers every line.
What AASHTO M249 actually requires — and what it doesn't
BINDER 18–22%? A FIXED DROP-ON RATE? INITIAL RL 300? NONE OF THAT IS IN THE TEXT. OUR ENGINEERS BREAK M 249-12 (2024) DOWN, TABLE BY TABLE.

M 249 is a factory-reflectorized, solid-form specification: 30–40% premix beads are mandatory, white TiO₂ is fixed at ≥ 10%, and the softening point sits in a 93–112°C band. BS 3262 is the British formulation framework — premix beads (≥ 20%) only when the line must reflectorize, softening point ≥ 65°C. We manufacture to both; the right choice is simply whichever standard your tender names.
Yes. M 249 leaves the drop-on rate and bead grade to the project, so specify them in your order — AASHTO M 247 Type 1, 2 and 3 beads are in our catalog and ship alongside the paint in the same container.
