What AASHTO M249 Requires
M 249 specifies a factory-reflectorized material: unlike BS 3262, the standard requires the manufacturer to premix 30–40% AASHTO M 247 Type 1 glass beads into the material at the plant, with more beads dropped on during application. The tables below list the standard’s specific requirements; the figures for our material against your specification come with each order’s datasheet.

The 30–40% covers the beads inside the material only; drop-on beads applied to the hot line are on top of it.

Colour is judged after conditioning the material for 240 ± 5 min at 218 ± 2°C — a report that skips the heat treatment does not prove M 249 compliance. For pre-qualification the standard also sets 180-day test-deck retained retroreflectivity: white ≥ 325, yellow ≥ 200 mcd·m⁻²·lx⁻¹, measured on a double-drop bead system.

Q-02What is the difference between AASHTO M249 and BS 3262 material?
M 249 is a factory-reflectorized, solid-form specification: 30–40% premix beads are mandatory, white TiO₂ is fixed at ≥ 10%, and the softening point sits in a 93–112°C band. BS 3262 is the British formulation framework — premix beads (≥ 20%) only when the line must reflectorize, softening point ≥ 65°C. We manufacture to both; the right choice is simply whichever standard your tender names.
Q-03Do you supply the drop-on glass beads as well?
Yes. M 249 leaves the drop-on rate and bead grade to the project, so specify them in your order — AASHTO M 247 Type 1, 2 and 3 beads are in our catalog and ship alongside the paint in the same container.
